George Thielen Memorial Scholarship

ASQ Dayton is proud to offer scholarships for undergraduate students in the Greater Dayton Area.

Scholarship Purpose

This scholarship honors the memory of George Thielen and his contributions to quality in the Dayton region.  It is for undergraduate study of the theory and application of quality control, quality assurance, quality improvement, and total quality management.  It covers the engineering, statistical, managerial, and behavioral foundations of those fields.

Scholarship Application and Process

To apply for  these scholarships, complete the application below and send it along with the required documentation to your listed school representative by 12:00 noon on Thursday, March 1, 2018.

ASQ Dayton Section 0909_Scholarship Application

You must provide a transcript from your most recent semester completed.

Application attachments / information required:

  • Transcript showing courses, titles, and grades with current cumulative GPA and total credit hours noted in the application form
  • List of honors and honorary societies
  • List of the quality-related courses, seminars, or workshops you have completed
  • Employment Record or Resume: List employment for past three years – emphasize employment related to quality. If you have not held employment, please be sure to emphasize educational experience as it relates to quality
  • Extra Curricular Activities
  • Two letters of reference
  • “Biographical Sketch” (Brief applicant background)
  • Two Essays – Both essays should show clear links between quality concepts and your past, present, and  future work experiences.  The ideas should be expressed in your own words.  The essays must be typed.
    1. An essay titled “How Quality Relates and Applies to My Chosen Career Field” in at 300-400 words. (To be attached)
    2. An essay titled “How I Plan To Apply Quality Concepts in the Future” in 300-400 words. (To be attached)

Selection Process

Selection will be made by a minimum of three judges selected from the Dayton Section of ASQ. The criteria for evaluation and selection include the following:

  1. Qualitative assessment of the essays, “How Quality Relates and Applies to My Chosen Career Field” and “How I Plan to Apply Quality Concepts in the Future”, that indicate the applicant’s depth of knowledge, understanding, and desire to apply quality concepts to improve operations/processes in his/her chosen field
  2. Quantitative assessment of the applicant’s transcript demonstrating academic accomplishments
  3. Qualitative assessment of the applicant’s employment experience, extracurricular activities, educational experience (seminars, ASQ meetings, etc.), and other accomplishments related to quality as described in the application
  4. Financial need as described in application (applicant background, etc.)

Note: The criteria are not listed in order of importance.

The committee choosing the recipients will be made up of independent disinterested persons. Any relatives, close friends, or potential recipients are excluded from the selection committee. The committee will evaluate all applications with identifying information removed to avoid the possibility of bias or discrimination.

Disbursement and Presentation Process

The judging committee may select up to 3 applicants for scholarship awards and reserves the right to select 0 applicants for award if none meet minimum eligibility.

The scholarship award per selected winning applicant will be in a minimum amount of $500 [USD] in order to provide the selected student(s) with sufficient material assistance.  ASQ Dayton may award up to $3,000 in total awards for the year.

Scholarships will be disbursed to the winner(s) by check from ASQ Dayton payable to the Bursar’s Office of the educational institution for the selected winner(s) to be used for educational expenses.

All applicants will be invited to an ASQ Dayton Student Scholarship program where scholarships will be presented on April 17, 2018.

You do not have to be an ASQ student member to apply.
